Minnesota Vikings name Frank Smith assistant head coach

The Vikings are bringing in Frank Smith as assistant head coach, adding a highly regarded offensive strategist to the staff.

Smith comes over after four seasons as offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins under Mike McDaniel, where he played a major role in shaping one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. He was voted the NFL’s top OC in 2023, despite not being the primary play caller — a nod to his impact on design, preparation, and weekly game planning.

A veteran NFL coach since 2010, Smith has worked with the Saints, Bears, Raiders, and Chargers, building a broad background that includes tight ends coach, offensive line coach, and run game coordinator. In Minnesota, he’ll support head coach Kevin O’Connell with a strong emphasis on run game planning and overall offensive structure.
